As part of the Master’s Degree in Participation and Local Policies, a special seminar is organized every year, devoted to a relevant topic from the academic and professional fields with a strong relation with civic engagement and participation.
This years event aims to reflect on the potential of digital networks for local participation. It is titled: “Digital Networks and Local Participation: An e-revolution in our cities or 2.0fever?”
The day will open with a keynote speech by Pedro Prieto Martín, president of the Assoc. KyoPol [Symbiotic City] and the main author of this blog. His keynote speech is titled “Challenges for the application of ICT for participation at the local level”, with the following summary:
This presentation reflects on why electronic participation is not really working in municipalities. Is it because of technical problems?, institutional problems?, or maybe social ones? What role are playing the different actors involved in urban governance? Starting with a clarification of key concepts about municipal (electronic) participation, the preentation will analyze the immediate past, the current context and the imminent future for the application of ICTs to improve local governance.
Afterwards, there will be two thematic sections, the first on ICT and local participation from the institutional perspective, by Clelia Colombo (UAB researcher) and Sandra Bravo (Brave Spindoctors), and the second on digital networks and local participation promoted by social movements, by researchers Camilo Cristancho and Arnau Monterde.
The seminar will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2013 in the Auditorium of the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Attendance is free upon registration on the email: pg.part.desenvolupament @ uab.es
